Hyundai Grandmaster Concept Hints at New SUV

The Hyundai Grandmaster Concept teases a new full-size SUV for Hyundai

Demand for large family SUVs is still going strong, and Hyundai’s HDC-2 Grandmaster concept posits that there’s no slowdown in sight. The new concept, which made its official debut at the Busan International Motor Show in South Korea in June, teases what the future could hold in terms of an eight-seat Hyundai SUV.

“Sensuous Sportiness”

The HDC-2 Grandmaster SUV concept utilizes Hyundai’s “Sensuous Sportiness” design language, following in the footsteps of the HDC-1 Le Fil Rouge concept that bowed in Geneva earlier this year. The name Grandmaster suggests a champion at chest, with Hyundai saying that its name is meant “to indicate that just as the sum of all chess pieces completes the game of chess, all forthcoming Hyundai vehicles will come to form a harmonious vehicle lineup demonstrating the Hyundai Look while each maintains distinctive character and role.”

And if “Sensuous Sportiness” becomes the unifying look of Hyundai’s lineup in the future, all the better. The HDC-2 Grandmaster is svelte and futuristic, perhaps most notable for its massive cascading grille.

Finding Its Place

Should the Grandmaster make its way into Hyundai’s lineup, it would slot nicely over the seven-passenger Santa Fe XL. There’s likely quite a bit of time between now and that hypothetical then—a production version of the Grandmaster probably wouldn’t head into production until around 2020 or so.

In the meantime, if you’re in the market for a family-friendly SUV, come check out the Santa Fe and Santa Fe XL at Gossett Hyundai Mazda Mitsubishi.
